We still have changeover projection (though from 6000 foot reels) at the
Capri Theater in Montgomery, Alabama.  By choice.

In the late 1980s I had a screening of one of my films at the No Nothing Cinema in San Francisco. They used carbon arc projection, which was perfect for the film, which is in black and white. At the end of my film, credits ran per usual and then went black although the sound track (music) continued. Unbeknownst to the projectionist, the most critical part of the film took place after the credits, when the picture came back on with a surprise. But once the projectionist saw black after the credits, he assumed the "picture" part of the film was over and turned off the lamp, although he kept the film running. I shouted from the audience "Turn it back on!!!" but by the time the lamp came back up, it was too late and the critical part of the film was over. I guess the experience actually exemplified one of the points of the film, which was about a viewer's (and projectionist's?) expectations re: cinematic form.
