AP: Supreme Court Takes on Copyright Case


WASHINGTON - April 2, 2003 - Supreme Court justices, looking for a
solution to a Hollywood dispute, were told Wednesday to go to the
videotape. Justices were urged to watch a seven-hour World War II
documentary in settling the fight between 20th Century Fox, which let
a copyright lapse, and a young video company that reused an old war
documentary.

Law.com: TV Networks Get Attorney Fees in Copyright Suit

A federal judge has awarded attorney fees to three major television
news networks for having to defend against an "objectively
unreasonable" copyright lawsuit that challenged obituaries for movie
star Robert Mitchum. The fee ruling from Southern District of New
York Judge Barbara S. Jones comes nearly seven months after the judge
granted summary judgment to CNN, ABC and CBS in a copyright
infringement claim that sought fees from the networks for using
scenes from "The Story of G.I. Joe" in their coverage of Mitchum's
death in July 1997.

Forbes: A Patent On Porn

NEW YORK - April 2, 2003-- It must have seemed like easy pickings at
the time. Acacia Research says it owns five U.S. and 17 international
patents covering the transmission and receipt of digital audio and
digital video content, otherwise known as streaming media. But before
attempting to enforce its patents with big outfits such as Yahoo! and
The Walt Disney Co., Acacia instead chose to go after the smallish
adult Internet sites that peddle videos of women (and men) doffing
their clothes--and much more.

Protection Specification for Peer Review

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--March 31, 2003--The Internet Streaming Media

Salt Lake Tribune: TiVo Subscribers Creating Archives of Wartime
Television Footage

DETROIT --March 31, 2003--TiVo Inc. subscribers are using the video
recorder that can pause and replay live television programs to
capture for posterity news footage of the Iraqi war, a user survey
found. About a third of 1,217 TiVo users said they used their sets to
digitally archive some coverage of the invasion of Iraq during the
first week of the war, said CNW Marketing/Research President Art
Spinella, who surveys TiVo users about their viewing habits.

Hollywood Reporter: Nat'l Geo signs two major deals

CANNES --March 27, 2003-- National Geographic has inked two major
deals at MIPTV aimed at exploiting its film archive assets -- one
involving a reciprocal partnership with Canada's National Film Board
and the other a content agreement with Associated Press Television
News.
