Re: [AMIA-L] 1964 film from Bell
Just in case anyone's interested, "Before It's Too Late" (which stars
Dick Van Dyke) was published with a 1964 AT&T copyright notice, so
it's technically still under copyright protection even though the
publisher no longer knows of it.
The crash test footage is likely to be footage shot by the Institute
of Traffic and Transportation Engineering (ITTE) at UCLA's School of
Engineering and Applied Science. Dozens of safety films made in that
period use similar ITTE footage to show the results of crash tests
involving unrestrained vs. restrained dummies; one justly renowned
film (in our collection) is "Safety Belt for Susie," produced by
Charles Cahill & Co. I suspect the archivists might have confused
UCLA and USC.
Information on ITTE, including still images from similar crash tests,
can be found at http://www.engineer.ucla.edu/history/itte.html and
http://www.engineer.ucla.edu/history/ittehigh.html.
