Jeff,
For several years until about 1990, the
Libraries Media Dept. staff made VHS reference copies for in-house use
on Maxell VHS stock. They seem to have held up very
well. I am not aware of any problems with the Maxell tape stock we
used. I don't know specifically about HGX Gold tape--I don't think that's
what was used here.

Subject: [AMIA-L] Maxell HGX Gold
Perhaps an odd question about a specific tape stock: Maxell HGX Gold. Other
than the fact that it was a consumer brand discontinued in 2002 (still
available for purchase online!), I know little about it. I wondered if anyone
had had any experience with this specific brand, good or bad--or with Maxell
VHS in general, I guess. Just trying to anticipate any potential
problems. Maxell tech support tried to be helpful, but beyond the date
the stock was discontinued, and the fact that they could check on
specific problem lot numbers, didn't have much to add.
Thanks,
