Re: [AMIA-L] News feeds into pool footage?

Greg,

Basically...the term pool footage (news coverage) relates to one camera crew or  TV station (out of a group of stations) covering an event and sharing the film/video with all other concerned TV stations.

An example would be when dealing with an important news story such as a court case, trial, prison riot, or specific news event where 3 or more camera crews would be perhaps 'overwhelming in presence' at the event, (how many camera crews can you line up in the average court room unless it is a huge court room and/or will the judge allow in the court room?).

In Ohio and dealing with the Lucasville prison riots during the early 1990's, one TV station and reporter (Bob Orr) was selected to cover a prisoner/media news conference...as an example, 15 TV stations filming the same news conference at once may and would have been overwhelming to the individuals speaking, in this case.

So pool coverage is just that. One station covers an event and then shares copies with the rest of the group.

Hello.
Just a quick question - What is pool footage? I have a fair bit of original NBC material from the 60's with that word written on the cans. I never knew what it meant.
Thanks in advance.

I restored the original that NBC had at 30 Rock. quite a while ago - was on umatic that was well worn (kindly put) when I got it.  Simultaneously remastered onto BetaSp and I believe D3. Took lots of tender loving care - the end result came out quite well. Definitely not pool footage. Very dramatic footage.

NBC News had a unilateral crew which shot the events from the point of

best of our knowledge, there was no Pool camera video of the event.  We
can license this material to you.  Feel free to contact us.

Hi:

I am wondering what is the copyright status of pool footage?

Hi Sally,

My gut reaction is that this was captured by a local, very specific
news crew and was definitely NOT a pool feed. This was not a press
conference, he was heading towards or away from his car on the street.

IF there was more than one camera there, that channel would own their
material individually.

Hello:
We're checking into footage of the Reagan assassination and have
found that several stock sources have this footage.
Is it possible that the material is owned by several sources
collectively aka a news feed?
If so who owns the copyright and who could legally license it.
In the 1980and 90s I noticed many stations aired footage from major
news sources then relicensed it.
I'm not certain they were legally able to do so but it seemed
commonplace.

Thanks,
Sally
