Greg,
Basically...the term pool footage (news coverage) relates
to one camera crew or TV station (out of a group of stations) covering an
event and sharing the film/video with all other concerned TV stations.
An example would be when dealing with an important news
story such as a court case, trial, prison riot, or specific news event where 3
or more camera crews would be perhaps 'overwhelming in presence' at the
event, (how many camera crews can you line up in the average court room unless
it is a huge court room and/or will the judge allow in the court
room?).
In Ohio and dealing with the Lucasville prison riots
during the early 1990's, one TV station and reporter (Bob Orr) was selected to
cover a prisoner/media news conference...as an example, 15 TV
stations filming the same news conference at once may and would have been
overwhelming to the individuals speaking, in this case.
So pool coverage is just that. One station covers an event
and then shares copies with the rest of the group.

Just a quick question - What is pool footage? I have a fair
bit of original NBC material from the 60's with that word written on the cans. I
never knew what it meant.
Thanks in advance.
