Try running a bead of glue between signatures close to the spine edge after
stitching. Also, make a folio-sized lining/flyleaf and glue the lining
portion to the inside cover front and back. Placing the kettle stitch and
first band of Coptic or sewing all along or whatever it is that you're using
for the binding stitch no more than 1/2" apart at top and tail helps, too.
