methylcellulose mysteries

Hello all,

I'm wondering why we in our workshop can go along for years mixing up
batches of methycellulose, then all of a sudden we get a thick, lumpy
batch, even though we're using the same recipe, with premium grade
materials, that we have always used.

Does anyone have clues for us?
