Your temperature setting is much too hot. 300 degrees is plenty hot. Ammonia
will give you problems on many leathers. It tends to turn them black. It did
not effect the patent leather because of the heavy pigment finish. A light
sprits of Krylon 1301 often does the trick. However it should not be necessary on
heavily pigmented leather. I think the main source of your troubles was the
excessive heat.
