Dear Friends of Marbling,
After a 25 year-long productive and varied life in Germany and
Austria, we moved back to Turkey a short time ago. Now I will continue
my life as the director of the youth center of a big university in
Turkey. For this reason, we decided to offer most of our books for a
short time with a price reduction of 50% off of the retail price. This
sale will continue only until mid-February.
If you have any interest in these books, please send an email first so
that copies from the limited number available can be reserved for you.
After this, you will be sent information regarding the specific cost of
the postage and account numbers in Turkey or in Germany to which the
money can be wired.
I can send the orders only with UPS (United Parcel Service) or DHL
(German Parcel Service) from Turkey. They should arrive in only a few
days. Payment is required up front, and once received, they will be
sent to you immediately. During my job at the university, my
occupation with marbling will in any case continue and our future
publications will be realized.

TIGER-EYE MARBLE
A Collection with New Creations
By Nedim and Dr. Nuran Sonmez
58 original samples of tiger-eye and sun marbling.
Text in German and English (the title on the cover is printed only in
German).
In this most recent book of patterns in their series, Nedim and Nuran
Sonmez present 58 tiger marbled papers in a broad range of colours and
patterns.
In the 19th century - known as the age of decorated paper production -
a broad and fascinating range of patterns was developed, in part
through technical innovations that provided for more rapid and diverse
coloured paper production. The experimental spirit and love of
exploration that characterized this age of technology also bore fruit
in the art of marbling. New types of patterns such as veins, schrotel,
tiger and suns emerged, in some cases through experimentation with
additives that trigger chemical reactions. New forms resembling eyes,
stars, sunbeams or microorganisms were pulled from the marbling bath.
The patterns in this book are called tiger, tiger-eye, and sunbeam or
sun pattern in reference to their specific appearance.

TURKISH EBRU PATTERNS
By Nedim Sonmez & Dr. Nuran Sonmez with 45 original samples of marbled
papers.
Text in German and English (the cover is printed only in German).
An unparalleled and truly unique collection of original ebru papers
that traces the history of patterns and colour in the Turkish art of
marbling.
The origins of the oriental ebru marbling technique can be traced to
the early 16th century. The oldest known dated examples from Istanbul
were produced during the last 25 years of that century. Since then, the
range of ebru patterns has developed along independent lines in Turkey.
This development is evident in patterns often based on representational
forms such as hearts, blossoms or flowers.
In this collection, Nedim and Nuran Sonmez present all of the Turkish
ebru patterns - from the earliest to the most recent - in a number of
variations. The collection also includes the oldest pattern of the
16th century, known as Hafif Ebru (pale-coloured ebru); Somaki Ebru
(porphyry ebru), Hatip Ebrusu (preacher ebru), with all of the
different variations of heart, star and blossom patterns, and the
especially splendid Zerefsanlı Ebru (ebru sprinkled with gold) and
Tahrirli Ebru (Ebru motifs outlined in gold) - both gilt with 23 1/2
carat gold!

Nedim Sonmez and Yvonne Jackle-Sonmez, works of an intensified
expression, that were given new subjects and meanings, are
unconventional messages, in which Oriental and European cultures
combine. They are poetic sheets of great charm.... Estranging
visionary, like a dream.

In terms of both technique and style, he is certainly one of the two
leading masters among the ebru artists of our time. Moreover, his
artistic work is built upon a solid foundation of scientific research.
To my knowledge, there is no other Turkish ebru artist who has delved
so deeply into the history of the discipline as well as the history of
Islamic manuscript decoration as has Nedim Sonmez. His books provide
eloquent testimony to the depth of his knowledge of the art-historical
roots and historical development of his art.
-Dr. Annemarie Schimmel
... Have clearly demonstrated in their thoroughly researched lectures
how important their studies have been to an understanding of an
extraordinarily interesting aspect of cultural history and highly
appealing aesthetic phenomenon. Thank to their intimate knowledge of
Turkish and central-European cultures - language, history and personal
contacts between supposedly widely separated areas - they have
succeeded in exploring the early history of the art of marbling to an
extent that no other researcher in this field has been able to achieve
before.
Dr.Frieder Schmidt
Deutsches Buch-and Schriftmuseum / Leipzig
The splendidly rich results bear witness to extraordinary
self-confidence, accompanied by beauty, for (Nedim Sonmez) has achieved
a synthesis harmony, balance and visual aesthetic pleasure.
Dr. Phil. E. Wolfgang Mick, former director of the Deutsches
Tapetenmuseum in Kassel
...Who has been able to combine so well the subtleties of an old
tradition with the freshness of his own ideas. I am especially happy
that he has been able to produce his work at a time when so much new
art seems to lack a sense of direction... Turkey should be happy to
have an ambassador so well able to convey the best of its traditions.
Dr. P.A. Andrews, Bonn
Nedim Sonmez is probably Germany’s best-known marbling artist, as
evidenced by a number of books that have now become classics of
literature on marbling as well as numerous exhibitions.
-CM Magazin 8/95
A different objective will be obtained by Nedim Sonmez’ other
publication, the enchanting miniature book, Turckisch Papir. This
covers much, but not all, of the ground covered by the folio From Ebru
to Marbled Paper; there is more, in the little book, about the history
of the use as well as the manufacture of marbled paper. No prudent
collector will want to be without either. The more so as the specimen
marbled pages in the miniature book are different from those in the big
book. Not only the scale but also the pattern of the marbling has been
subtly changed to fit the miniature format.
-The Book Collector. 46-2/1997
One can safely say that Nedim Sonmez, who has occupied a niche in the
art of our time with his marbled pictures and patterned papers, has
earned a place of prominence in the broad field of art scholarship -
both in Germany and abroad. As a scholar and tireless researcher... he
has quietly become one of the worlds leading experts on the subject.

NEDIM SONMEZ & NURAN SONMEZ
Nedim Sonmez was born in Havsa, Turkey in 1957. Upon completion of his
higher education in Istanbul, he settled in Germany. He devote all of
his work in art to ebru (marbling), a technique whose basic principles
he learned as a student at the school of education. In 1983, he opened
an art gallery in Constance devoted exclusively to works of ebru, He
established a publishing firm in 1987. During 25 years of life and work
as an ebru artist in Germany and Turkey, he has presented more than
fifty solo exhibitions at many locations, including a number of
well-known museums.
At both solo and group exhibitions, he has clearly proven that ebru,
which has been regarded for centuries as merely a paper-colouring
technique, actually involves a rich language of expression forms that
is comparable to those of other artistic disciplines. He gave direction
to the ebru, which was long based in many cases upon arbitrary results,
creating a specific form of expression that is not limited to designs
alone - the landscapes introduced to the art of ebru in the early
1980s. Yet aside from such innovations, the artist is very concerned
with preserving the traditional dimensions of ebru as well.
In additions to his many exhibitions, Nedim Sonmez has presented the
fruits of this research on the history and methods of ebru to a broad
public in books, articles, conference lectures and international shows.
He is one of the most highly respected personalities in the world of
ebru today.
Nuran Sonmez studied mineralogy in Izmir, Turkey. After working as a
scientist at the University, she moved to Germany. Nedim Sonmez
encouraged her experimentation with marbling. Keenly interested in the
technical aspect of this art, she worked closely with her husband in
developing new marbling colours based on 19th century traditional
formulas. She is currently editing the series of pattern book in
collaboration with Nedim Sonmez.
