BOOK 2006


Alexandria: A Cosmopolitan City

Since Alexandria was established in 331 B.C. by Alexander the Great and 
until the Roman invasion led by Octavius in 30 B.C., Alexandria was one of 
the world's greatest cities. Both culturally and socially it was the 
capital of the Hellenistic World. Alexandria was the center of attraction, 
where material wealth came from both Africa and Asia. It also attracted 
many sources of great thought and culture from around the Greek World. The 
city provided the energy and inspiration to convert this profound material 
richness into civilization and emanate it throughout the Mediterranean.

For one thousand years, Alexandria maintained its superiority and held its 
place at the apex of great thought and culture. It remained the gate 
through which material richness was transformed into the intangible 
spirituality that the East would inherit.

Now, on the surface nothing remains from ancient Alexandria, save from the 
obelisk known as Pompey's pillar where the great Serapeum Temple once stood 
tall. Almost everything else disappeared, buried beneath the sea water, 
under the desert sands or dissolved into the mud on the banks of the Nile 
and used as building material. Or perhaps it fell victim to the pillage of 
the many foreign colonists. Even today we do not know the exact location of 
ancient Mouseion and library of Alexandria. Most of the Ptolemaic 
literature has disappeared and, the little that is known today was found in 
translated Latin and Arabic texts.

However, for one thousand years Alexandria remained the greatest city of 
the world in many respects. It was the greatest seaport and therefore a 
center of world trade. It became a cosmopolitan society, to which no other 
society compared, and in its library and Mouseion it held treasures of 
knowledge and research, which became the most valuable source of 
inspiration for artists and writers whose works, in turn, became models 
stimulating the emulation of other intellectuals around the Mediterranean.

A symbol of civilization, Alexandria was a safe haven for iconoclasts and 
refugees from all around the world. Alexandria was a citadel of 
intellectual tolerance, religion and philosophy.

Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of the city was the activity and 
prosperity of the artists, scientists and scholars who came from all over 
the world to work together at the Mouseion and the library, supported by 
the state. To maintain, restore, collect, protect and add to what previous 
generations had contributed. This group was able to maintain the torch of 
knowledge. Without their efforts and even greater divide would have existed 
between the ancient and modern worlds.

Once again a library has risen in Alexandria, once again emanating rays of 
culture to enlighten the world like the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria 
beckoning to everyone for another synergistic of culture, thought and art, 
not only in the Mediterranean region, but throughout the whole world.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina proudly announces the 2nd Biennale for "The 
Artist's Book" 2006.

Call for the artists:

Bibliotheca Alexandrina announces the Second International Biennale for the 
Artist's Book 2006. The exhibition will be held from 15 April to 25 May 2006.

Guidelines:

You are cordially invited to participate in the Second International 
Biennale for the Artist's Book 2006.

The artist is kindly asked to donate one edition to the Bibliotheca 
Alexandrina's Book Arts collection.
