THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
This is a temporary grant-funded position (scheduled to end May 31, 2006)
to perform conservation and preservation treatment on the collection of
early Italian architectural treatises in the Department of Drawings and
Prints. The work is supervised by a curator from that Department in
cooperation with Watson Library's Preservation Librarian. A wide variety of
conservation treatments will be performed, using the facilities of the
Watson Library's Book Conservation Unit.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
* Assess each item in a subset of the collection (Italian architectural
treatises of the 15th-19th centuries) and determine appropriate housing and
treatment.
* Supervise volunteer staff in creating mylar, four-flap, clamshell, and
other enclosures.
* For those books requiring custom-made boxes, measure books and complete
order forms.
* Carry out treatments as necessary. These may include but are not limited
to: dry-cleaning and refurbishing of paper, leather, and vellum; making
repairs to joints, hinges, caps, corners, and edges of books; repairing
endbands; recasing and rebacking; paper repair; flattening of warped vellum
boards; rebinding.
* Complete condition and treatment reports, together with photographic
documentation, and assist in preparing final report for granting agency.
* Other related duties
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience & Skills:
* The collection of early Italian architectural treatises in the Department
of Drawings and Prints is one of the most important of its kind, comprising
many rare, early books in original bindings of vellum, leather, paper, and
wood. In order to be considered for this position, a conservator must
possess a minimum of five years experience in rare book treatment,
including considerable work with fifteenth and sixteenth-century volumes.
* Demonstrated skills in the full-range of book conservation treatment and
repairs required.
* Clerical and photographic skills adequate for documentation of the
project required.
* Reading knowledge of Italian helpful.
* Some knowledge of architecture preferred but not required.
Knowledge & Education:
* Completion of a formal graduate-level program in book conservation required.
* Knowledge of printmaking processes and 16th -20th century European
binding structures.
