A View from an Outsider

Recently I had the opportunity and pleasure to give a lecture and a 
workshop for The Sonoran
Collective for Book and Paper Arts in Tuscon, Arizona.  As I give many 
of these, I think I have
some perspective on  various groups.  If this organization is any 
indication of where the book
and paper arts is going we're all in for an exciting and rapid period of 
growth.  I was immensely
impressed with the individuals who are part of this, in regards to their 
creative talents and especially,
their support and encouragement of one another.This is all the more 
surprising because of
the eclectic nature of each person's background.The group encompasses 
diverse processes
and styles. It is interesting that artists are coming from such varied 
disciplines as weavers,
painters, sculptors, printmakers, surface designers, mathematicians, 
scientists etc,.

Aside from bringing in people like me they have regular small Salons and 
In-Over-My-Head-Groups
where the key word is sharing. They also publish a Quarterly Journal 
with tip ins.  Paper Arts people
wishing to start their own group might consider taking a page from their 
book or moving to Tucson.
