CALIFORNIA RARE BOOK SCHOOL
LOS ANGELES, CA, February 22, 2006 - The California Rare Book
School (CALRBS) at UCLA is pleased to announce that it is now accepting
applications for the summer 2006 courses. Applications and program details
can be found at the CALRBS website: www.calrbs.org.
The California Rare Book School, a project of the Department
of Information Studies at the Graduate School of Education and Information
Studies (GSE&IS) at UCLA, is a continuing education program that provides
the necessary knowledge and skills for professionals working in all
aspects of the rare book community, and for students interested in this
field.
?The courses we are offering this summer will be relevant for
information professionals, students, booksellers, and bibliophiles alike?
said Professor Beverly P. Lynch, founding director of the new school.
?CALRBS students will benefit from an expert faculty and the wealth of
special collections in the Los Angeles area.?
The 2006 schedule for the California Rare Book School is:
Week 1 (July 31-August 4)
-Introduction to Special Collections Librarianship
faculty: Susan M. Allen, Getty Research Institute; Lynda Claassen,
University of California, San Diego
-Book Illustration Processes to 1900
faculty: Terry Belanger, Rare Book School, University of Virginia
-Descriptive Bibliography
faculty: Carl Berkhout, University of Arizona
Week 2 (August 7-11)
-Rare Book Cataloging
faculty: Deborah J. Leslie, Folger Shakespeare Library
-The Book in the West
faculty: Gary F. Kurutz, California State Library
The tuition for 2006 is $995/course. Course size is limited
to 15 students. Admission for CALRBS courses is on a rolling basis.
Scholarships are available for students enrolled in an accredited
university. Applications and detailed course descriptions can be found at
www.calrbs.org.
CALRBS operates with the support of the Ahmanson Foundation,
the Book Club of California, the Institute of Museum and Library Services,
and many of the academic and research libraries and antiquarian
booksellers of Southern California; and in association with the Rare Book
School, University of Virginia. For additional information about the
