PRESSING MATTER At The University of the Arts
Through March 14-24, Philadelphia's University of the Arts? Printmaking/Book Arts first year graduate students present the exhibition PRESSING MATTER. The exhibition will take place in Gallery One, located in the basement of Hamilton Hall, 320 South Broad Street. Included in the exhibition is the work of Elena Bouvier, Amanda D?Amico, Bo Duvall, Sun Young Kang, Phuong Pham, Stephanie Stump, Graham Watson, and Michelle Wilson. A free public reception will be held on March 17, 2006, from 5-8 PM.
Artists? books have become one of the most complicated mediums of fine art to define. PRESSING MATTER will feature the art of the book as intricately made constructions both temporal and spatial, drawing on text and image. The artists also explore related aspects of book art through narrative and non-narrative forms of traditional and contemporary printmaking, installation, and multimedia.
Elena Bouvier, a Philadelphia native is best known for her photography work for the City Paper and Philadelphia Weekly. She is currently exploring themes of life, death, and rebirth in book form.
Amanda D?Amico is from Minneapolis, MN. Her work investigates American history through humor and contemporary popular culture.
Bo Duvall grew up in West Virginia where he was raised in the local library and art museum. His work is a game or riddle, sometimes played out with a dark sense of humor.
Sun Young Kang is a native of South Korea, where she received a degree in traditional Korean painting. Currently she is exploring her Buddhist beliefs in her work.
Phuong Pham claims various parts of central Pennsylvania and Maryland as her home, and works primarily with bodily structures and materials. She examines visceral memoirs translated through various print media.
Stephanie Stump is from Chicago and has a background in graphic design. In her work, she focuses on connectivity among people and combines the use of conventional and digital printing processes.
Graham Watson produces books that document human interactions with our environment. His pieces are tools for contemplation of the complex systems within the natural world.
Michelle Wilson sees her work as a form of activism against environmental degradation. A native of central Pennsylvania, she has been living and working in Philadelphia for the past ten years.
The University of the Arts graduate program in Book Arts and Printmaking offers a course of study in which students explore the book as an art form that incorporates two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional structure. It embraces both the rich history of the book and the new processes and forms created by digital technology. Its concept of book arts includes fine-press printing and illustrated texts, visual and verbal narratives, and works that push the idea of a book toward unconventional expectations.
