What was needed, I think, was the equivalent of a swift kick saying, "Yes, you do need to apply a little elbow grease and completely clean the spine." I had worried about cutting through some of the sewing and ending up with a lot more to do. The dull chisel approach wasn't enough, but a sharp 1/4" micro chisel managed to cut the cloth away a bit at a time, and more paste softened the hide glue underneath enough to scrape it away. An hour's work.
Out of curiosity, do any of you still use hide glue? I have a bit here and an old pot, but have never tried it.
