Rigid Page Binding Workshop
Two-day workshop with Alicia Bailey
Saturday and Sunday, March 18 - 19, 2006 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
In the R. W. Woodruff Library at Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia
Using rigid pages allows an artist to work with materials such as
Plexiglas, glass, wood and metal or cardboard. Such techniques are
particularly useful for an artist working with sculptural book forms. In
this workshop three different rigid page structures are taught through
model building.
The first model is adapted from Keith Smith's many explorations of sewing
single sheets and across the spine bindings. The second is adapted from
Hedi Kyle's Mongolian Book Structure and works especially well with
sandwiches of layered, transparent materials. The third model is one of
Alicia's own design and utilizes Tyvek hinges sandwiched between pairs of
rigid boards. All of the models will be constructed with binders' board
but demonstrations and discussions for preparing and using other
materials, such as glass, ceramic, wood and metal will be part of the
workshop presentation. All model supplies will be provided.
The rigid page workshop doesn't require binding experience and may appeal
to artists in other fields, particularly painters and sculptors, who are
interested in developing their work into a more interactive format.
Instructor Alicia Bailey of Denver, Colorado has worked as a studio artist
for 25 years in a variety of two- and three-dimensional medias, focusing
on the book form for the past ten. A familiarity with so many materials
is invaluable to her approach to the book form as interactive sculpture.
She has been a visiting artist at high schools and colleges throughout the
US and has books in numerous public and private collections.
