I have been wanting to share some information that I saw in Popular 
Science magazine --- and now is a good time.
On page 36 of the June 2006 issue of Popular Science, there is an 
article about "New Ultrathin Radio ID Tags" that can be embedded in 
money to thwart counterfeiters.
Hitachi has made the newest tag that is skinny enough to fit inside a 
dollar bill. The tag is only 0.15 millimeter square and 7.5 microns 
thick, and is 1/15 the size of the next smallest chip. It can store up 
to 128 bits of data, such as the owner's name and a serial number, and 
can be read by scanners more than 10 feet away.
The article explains the design, and continues with a statement that an 
earlier version was successfully used for tickets at the 2005 World 
Exposition in Japan. And, that "a new, even slimmer version could 
appear in European and Japanese currency within the next few years".
It certainly would appear that this type of miniature technology could 
be easily be adapted for use in libraries and museums.
