Some will work well for years but fresh foil is a better way to go if

AND, don't forget that some foils --- old or new --- will work well on
some materials, like a particular paper, but might not work at all on
different types of bookcloth or leather. All you can do "is try", as
long as you understand the importance of temperature, pressure and
dwell.
