I've used acrylic gloss medium on calico cotton cloth successfully. I tape 
the four corners of the cloth upside down on plexi glass and pour a puddle 
of gloss medium in the middle. I then spread it around with a plastic card 
like an old buss pass and scrape the excess back into the container. 9 out 
of 10 time this medium doesn't seep through. The down side is that when 
gluing this cloth to Davey board you have to futz with it longer to get it 
to stick to the board.
