Hi, Jane,

The advice from Søren Ibsen, and Valinda Carroll was as good as
any generic advice could be expected to be, given that you did
not give much information about the map in question.

Is it a large (wall-type) map?  Does it have a varnish coat (as
large maps often have)?  Are there any hand-colored areas?

If the old fabric backing is sound, why not leave it be?

If there is only local damage, and the backing/map paper is
sound, local mends using Japanese paper & wheat starch paste
or a combination of starch & methyl cellulose paste should work.

Just take care that the paste is not too wet, or tide lines will
form on the fabric & possibly wick through to the paper.
