Actually it is usually captured as a by product of petroleum refining or 
the making of ammonia. While theoretically it could be made from 
atmospheric CO2 the process is too costly.
Huge quantities of energy are also expended liquefying it in order to 
make dry ice, another wasting of natural resources.
