I bought and returned 4 scanners, before i found the Epson 4490 - i like 
it very much.

it has plastic templates for scanning different sized film and slides, 
however you don't HAVE to use them.
it took me AGES to figure out that i can cut a black construction paper 
template of my own and then cut out the exact window  i need.
I have had to scan in many medium format vintage negatives as well as my 
own 127 film negatives and these do not fit in the given attachment.

I also found that is hard to override the software that comes with some 
scanners, unless you are using a third party scanning software
you may be stuck with presets that are too low.
for photo restoration i like to scan the negs very high then reduce 
after I have worked on them, an the epson software is very flexible.
