Archival microfilming standards

I have been asked by the conservator of the Provincial Archives
of New Brunswick to enquire of the list whether anyone is aware of
resolution standards for archival microfilming of hand written
documents. Variations in paper thickness, colour, and quality,
and the composition, colour, and legibility of the ink complicate
the filming process. Is there a standard that we should try to
meet?
