Staining ivory

I am sitting here with Tracey Shields, an National Museum of American
History 3rd year intern from the Buffalo program in objects
conservation. She is interested in knowing if anyone has any information
about deliberately staining or dyeing ivory.  She is interested in
recipes and would like to know if anyone has experienced "accidental
coloration" on ivory for whatever reason.
