Brass coatings

An addendum/correction to my recent comment on lacquer ingredients. I
just ran across a reference to "red sanders" in a publication from
Frontier Cooperative Herbs (P.O. Box 299, Norway, Iowa 52318):

    SANDALWOOD RED (cut & sifted) - Pterocarpus santalinus / sanders,
    red sanders, santal / [from] West Germany / These bright red 1/4
    inch shreds are used for color and texture in herbal
    crafts....Unlike yellow sandalwood, red sandalwood is not especially
    aromatic, but can be used as a natural dye. On cottons and woolens,
    sandalwood can produce a red color, and it may be used as an
    under-hue for indigo as well. FDA approved only for flavoring
    alcoholic beverages.

So, it is sandalwood (not sandarac) and would be available through a
good herbal supply company. Hope this is helpful.
