Dyeing bison hair

Our museum has a 37-year old diorama with several bison whose hair
is quite light faded. We would like to try to restore the colour.
Does anyone have experience with this? We are looking to do it
ourselves, in situ. Concerns are: reaction of bison hair to human
hair dyes; effectiveness of other methods, eg. some kind of
paint,possibly delivered as a mist or aerosol. Any advice on which
direction to take would be greatly appreciated.
