barcoded labels

David Zeidberg addressed this problem in a presentation at Duke during the RBMS
 preconference earlier this year:
Because of inadequate space, UCLA's Special Collections recently sent nearly 10
0,000 items from its book collections to a new remote storage facility on the c
ampus. Those controlling the facility required that each item sent to them be s
upplied with a barcoded label.
Non-Special Collections books had these labels applied directly to their bindin
gs, an approach we found unsatisfactory. After some discussion it was agreed t
hat each of our books would be wrapped in acid-free paper & the barcoded label
be attached to this wrapper. This has worked reasonably well for us: the wrappe
r & the book have not yet been separated. If they were, since the records are i
ncluded in our ORION online information system, it would be an easy enough matt
er to identify the book & provide it a replacement label.
