I'd like to add another part to Bob Martin's question about use of local
systems for circulation of Special Collections materials: the University of
Chicago Library maintains a Lotus 123 file for circulation, logging in
records as they are created from the call slips. These records are
downloaded quarterly and used to generate a pretty wide range of statistics
and information about how the collection is being used. There are obvious
advantages to using the library's circulation system, but I am wondering
whether those who do use them are able to get statistical reports which, in
Special Collections, are of much use in analyzing reader patterns and
collection use.
