Let me answer Terry's questions about the barcoded lockets we use here: they
do hang from the top of the spine down. This means that they are easy to read
but the shelves do not look as neat and tidy as they might. The hanging locket
has the same disadvantage of the slip -- it can become separated from the book.
With fragile items it is not such a good idea to lay the locket in. If the
item can be placed in an envelope or phase box, the locket can hang from that.
Presumably having the barcode on the hanging locket would make inventory
easier. One would still have to look at each item to determine if the locket
corresponded, however, the barcodes could be read easily with an electronic
scanner. I
have not tried this yet... This system was started here years ago. I am stuck
with it -- at least for now! Susan M. Allen, Claremont Colleges
