barcodes

We had not planned on barcoding materials in Special
Collections, but found that GEAC would not accept the record
without a barcode.

Our barcode is attached at the top of the back of an
acid free slip that is placed in the book, and is above the
text block.

I would like to note that we use slips made from acid
free paper for our books rather than a product like Identa-
strips. The Identa-strips are made from too heavy a card
stock, are stiff and may damage fragile pages. Also, for
materials that are bound together, any number of strips
would have to be placed in a book with the potential for
spine damage.

We purchased several reams of acid free paper from
University products (8 1/2" x 11") and sent them out to be
cut into four slips per page (2 3/4" x 11"). A half circle
was die cut at the top of each slip (flap down) to be
placed over a page or an envelope (usually we just lay
them in the book).

Information that is typed on the front of the slip
includes: call number, author and the first part of the title
and at the bottom of the slip: the donor's name and a brief
mention of any conservation treatment performed. So far
this has worked out well for our purposes.
