Peter Flynn's description of "Teach Yourself Upcountry Swahili" reminded
me of Phillippe Garnier's "Gemmulae linguarum", 1641, which is a multi-
lingual phrase book for travellers which provides the tourist with help
in protesting bad food, dirty sheets, and the likelihood of highwaymen
in four languages. Does any library collect phrase books like this or
"Teach Yourself [language]" books like Flynn's?
