Other files: MAILBASE CARD, RMBS, PACSCL

I guess I'll stop when I get into the traditional *big* trouble. First,
the mailbase business, and then those who are also on NOTRBCAT may go take
a stroll because they've already been here.

MAILBASE USER_GUIDE is apparently now being called something like reference
card, and is now on the NOTRBCAT filelist as MAILBASE CARD. It gives the
commands to be used with mailbase, how to deal with the lists, etc.

Incidentally, I have all kinds of queasy feelings about saying things about
mailbase, which is none of my business at all. Who knows whether Cristy was
being super-cautious because education took some hard knocks under Thatcher
and if too many Americans and other furriners show up on those mailbase lists,
that rug may be pulled from the Brits to whom they belong? I have absolutely
no idea. Michael Smallman, as our resident mailbase listowner, is the person
to listen to.

I have been to mailbase almost exclusively during the evenings and weekends,
and have found response time to be quite good.

Now, in addition to MAILBASE CARD, we have other new files that you might be
interested in. First, an incomplete set of reportst from RBMS 1992 that we
hope will be extended:

RBMS1 BUDD Not what it used to be: scholarly communication then and now
RBMS2 PETERS The coevolution of networks, networkerd information, and
                 learning communities
RBMS3 BRENNAN Informal publication and the scholarly record: bits and bytes
from the experience of editing Humanist and other electronic
                 lists
RBMS4 THESAUR Using the RBMS thesauri: theory and practice
RBMS5 INGRAM Preservation on the home front: what to do until the fund ship
                 arrives
RBMS6 NEAVILL Concepts of "text" in the electronic environment
RBMS7 KAHIN Copyright issues in electronic publishing
RBMS9A YOUNG In the matter of broadsides: printing, cataloging, and scholar-
                 ly use [printer-poet's view]
RBMS10A GRAHAM Preserving the intellectual record in the electronic environ-
                 ment
RBMS10B REACTORS Reactor panel to the above

We will be getting 10B on Rita Warnock's librarian's view of broadsides, but
if anyone would be willing or could be coaxed to submit reports on other
seminars, that would make us very happy indeed. Don't let the report number-
ing throw you. Additions and corrections to reports are most welcome; the
Kahin is especially troublesome, I think.

Also new is PACSCL SEMINAR, an electronic copy of the article by Michael Joseph
that Peter mentioned recently. Since Stephen Zietz tells me that the hosting
PACSCLnews has a subscription list of around 800, nearly everyone may already
have it. If not, he will send a copy free on request to any of the follow-
ing contact points:

postal: Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries
         University of Pennsylvania Archives
         North Arcade, Franklin Field
         Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19104-6320

phone: 215-898-5240

e-mail: sjz@pacscl.uarc.upenn.edu

The newsletter contains *pictures* lacking in the ASCII file, and of course
other material as well. It's a nice job.

Files are ordered in the usual way, but a quick run-through for new members:
Send mail addressed to LISTSERV@INDYCMS (basic Bitnet address), modified to
LISTSERV AT INDYCMS for Bitnetters on unreconstructed IBMs, or
LISTSERV@INDYCMS.IUPUI.EDU for Internetters.

Include on first line of *message area* (not subject line) your request, e.g.:
GET RBMS1 BUDD
You may stack multiple commands on separate lines. There is a kilobyte limit
to the amount of stuff that can be sent to any one e-address during a 24-hour
period, the limit varying from Listserv to Listserv. I really can't say what
INDYCMS's limit is, but it will let you know if you offend its sense of
propriety. Bitnetters who have difficulty receiving files may append F=MAIL
to the request in order to receive the files as mail, e.g.:
GET RBMS1 BUDD F=MAIL

Whew. That's it for now.

Kathryn Wright, Indiana State University, LIBKAT@INDST or INDST.INDSTATE.EDU
