This may be of minimal interest for the current debate, but since the topic
has been in the air of late I thought I would mention it. I have been
working with a manuscript collection which includes a lot of diplomatic
correspondence from the 1930s. I have come across several typewritten
letters which make use of both catchwords and page numbers. The correspond-
ents were a U.S. State Department official and the American Minister to
Hungary, respectively. Don't know if this was just an affectation or
common practice. Just thought I'd throw it out there.
