signatures

Francesca,
.
The collational formula you include in your query displayed in my system
as "A|p2|s B1 B2 C-K|p2|s ..." etc. If that is how it displays in your
system, it has been garbled by the downloading process. The numerals
should be superscript; the "|p ...|s" characters are 'escape characters'
(normally invisible) which stand for "superscript on" and "superscript
off", respectively. We had this headache when we downloaded all our
rare book records several years ago, and we had to go into each
record and correct the signature statement.

Your example should probably read something like: "A2 B1 B2 C-K2 L1 M-
N2 O1 P-R2 S1 T-X2 Y1 (Y1 verso blank)"; if you change all the numerals
in this example to superscript, it will look more or less as it should.
.
I am afraid, though, that in many cases the only way to figure out how
the signature statement should look is to track down the original
OCLC (or whatever) record.
.
Hope this helps.
