Cross posting to Ex-Libris and Autocat, if anyone can post elsewhere
more cognizent, will you please do so???
I am cataloguing a work, published in 1879 (Hartford, Conn.) with
title "The Oriental world, or New travels in Turkey, Russia, Egypt, Asia
Minor, and the Holy Land ... by Thomas W. Knox." On p. iv the following
note appears:
"List of illustrations. Principally designed, or reproduced from
photographs, by Karl Giradet [sic] ..."
I looked through our limited artist resources and uncovered the
following:
Havlice, P. P. Index to artisitc biography gives the name as
Karl Girardet and dates 1810-1871. States he was a Swiss artist.
D.T. Mallett lists him as Karl Girardet, 1813-1871. Says he was a
Swiss artist.
NUC pre-1956 lists Girardet, Karl, 1821-1893. Also an artist, who
evidently did an edition of Robinson Crusoe and a travel book.
RLIN lists about 30 clusters for an artist Karl Girardet, varying
dates 1810-1871, 1813-1871, and 1821-1893. There seems to be much
confusion as to which Karl Girardet did which things.
What I specifically would like to know, is, which Karl Girardet
is responsible for the pictures in my volume and in another work
by C. Flammarion called Atmosphere. I'm not sure if they are the same
person, or different.
I would like exact references, please, as I will probably establish
this heading for the Name Authority File, so I also need to resolve
the 1810/1813 birthdate.
Please respond directly to me and not to the list.
Thank you very much
