I think one of the hardest things to get across to general librarians, to say
nothing of public at large, is the notion of the importance of books as
physical objects, that is the idea that they might have value apart from the
text. I don't know how you do get that across, however. Sometimes I think
you're either born with that sense, at least in rudimentary form, or you're
