It isn't too recent (1973), but a standard work on Audubon's Birds is:
Waldemar H. Fries, The Double Elephant Folio: The Story of
Audubon's Birds of America, ALA, 1973.
This book includes a detailed census of such things as subscribers, sets,
extant complete sets, the provenances of various sets etc., etc. and much
more info. about the big book.
Good luck finding a copy of Fries.
