Re: Mag mutilation, N. Baker, etc.

I just want to thank Peter Graham for his comments on the reaction to Nicholson
Baker's piece. I have to say I'm appalled at the collective bashing we've
handed out to him for having had the temerity to take seriously what gener-
ations of librarians have spent their lives on and for suggesting that the
"big wooden machine" in our reference rooms is worthy of some consideration
as an intellectual achievment. Here at least is someone who cares enough about
libraries to explain (and quite well) bibliographic utilities in a magazine
with a huge general readership.
The brazenness of the Ohio student is really quite awesome -- she brags
not only about her mindless destruction but about her inability to tell the
truth. Thanks to whoever put the article on EXLIBRIS. I hope (and expect)
that it will be printed in American Libraries for the edification of all. I'd
also be very interested in the reaction of other students on her campus to her
sociopathic opinions.
