I have recently received a memo from Angela Meadows at INTERPOL
reporting a theft in Poland, in the National Archives Department of Jelenia
Gora. The date of the theft is listed as "between 17.7.1993 and 17.1.1994."
Fifty-six manuscripts and 31 books have been reported stolen. I will quote
from the memo: "56 original manuscripts relating to the history of the town
of Jelenia Gora (Hirschberg) and its region. All attached seals are wax...
each document had its own grey paper envelope, reinforced by steel rivets
initialled with 'L&S'. Each envelope was stamped: 'K. St. A. Breslau - DEP.
Hirschberg No.' The outside of each document was stamped with a rectangular
stamp reading: Koenigsl. Staats-Archiv. Breslau."
This is followed by a ten page list of the items. The manuscripts span
the 14th through the 17th centuries. The books are mostly 18th century and
many have Breslau or Leipzig imprints.
Obviously, this is very specialized material. If your needs require
that you have immediate access to the entire list, please send me a self
addressed stamped envelop.
If you have information, please contact Angela Meadows, Art Program
Analyst, INTERPOL, 202-616-6769 or 202-272-8383. Thank you, Susan
