Part of my duties in the Rare Book Department of The Free Library of
Philadelphia involves handling photography and reproduction requests for items
in our collections. I have been invited to serve on a task force addressing
copyright and rights and reproduction issues called by the Registrar's
Committee of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (MAAM). Working with the
goal of some sort of workshop for MAAM in 1997, we are addressing three
issues: 1- rights and reproduction systems and policies presently in use, 2-
understanding the legal aspects of copyright, and 3- the impact of new
technologies on the above.
The committee is interested in expanding the scope of the discussion beyond
museums to include libraries and other institutions that deal with these
issues. I have been asked to solicit copies of policy statements and/or forms
used by rare book and manuscripts libraries which address the granting of
reproduction rights for items housed in their collections.
If people would kindly mail or fax me copies of their policies and forms,
I would greatly appreciate it. I will keep respondents informed as to the
results of the survey. If there is interest out there, perhaps we could present
the workshop for a Rare Books and Manuscript audience at an appropriate venue.
Thanks.
