Position Opening:  CURATOR, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
                      THE JOHN HAY LIBRARY
                        BROWN UNIVERSITY

Position available:  November 1, 1995
Salary appointment range:  $32,275-$46,550, based on experience
Reports to Associate University Librarian for Special Collections.

Position Description:  Responsible for development and management of
holdings pertaining primarily to U.S. history, including collections in
political, diplomatic, business, commercial, social, educational and
intellectual history, and pre-20th century imprints in a variety of fields.
Among the discrete, named collections in U.S. history are the McLellan
Lincoln Collection, the Rider Collection of Rhode Island History, the Morse
Whaling Collection, the John Hay Collection, the Metcalf Pamphlet Collection,
and the Gordon Hall-Grace Hoag Collection of Extremist and Dissenting
Literature.

The Curator will work closely with other Special Collections Curators
where collection responsibilities overlap, as in the history of medicine,
American literature, and the book arts.  There also will be close
coordination with Curators responsible for specialized formats, in
particular manuscripts, broadsides, prints and photographs.

All curators' responsibilities may be modified to some degree as a result
of a possible reconfiguration of staff taking place over the next two years.
This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled individual to work in
a challenging and dynamic environment.

Qualifications:  MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school.  Minimum
of 5 years of professional experience in rare books or special collections
in a university or research library.  Academic background in American
history, advanced degree preferred.  Ability to work collegially and flexibly
with library staff, faculty, students, and donors.  Excellent written and
oral communication skills.  Familiarity with reference works and secondary
literature in the field.  Understanding of bibliographic description and
control within a rare book and special collections context.  Knowledge of
the rare book trade.  Knowledge of technology and its application to rare
books and special collections.

The John Hay Library is the rare book, manuscript, and special collections
division of the Brown University Library.  It is one of the larger academic
special collections in the United States, with broad strengths in American
history and culture;  the history of science, mathematics,medicine, and such
related subjects as magic and the occult;  British and continental history
and literature;  military history and iconography;  early printed books in a
broad range of fields;  the book arts;  the literature of American extremism
and dissent;  exhaustive collections of the work ov virtually all U.S. and
Canadian poets and playwrights;  and major collections of prose by authors
as diverse as Thoreau, Shaw, Wells, Lovecraft, Dante, Machiavelli, and Zola.
In addition to books and manuscripts, the librry holds substantial
collections
of sheet music, broadsides, photographs, prints, and museum objects.
