MAJOR MAP THEFT

I regret to inform my fellow map lovers of my great misfortune this weekend.
First, on a postive note, the Miami Map Fair sponsored by the Historical
Museum of Southern Florida, was wonderfully created and well attended.
Second, after this enjoyable experience, items which I displayed at the show
were placed in a carrying case and put in the trunk of my rented car. From
there I traveled to Miami Beach and parked next to the Fountain Bleu Hotel
in an open Municipale Parking Lot - families walking around, bright sunny
day. When I returned from dinner, the window was smashed and all the
contents of the trunk were gone! There had been no attractive inducement for
a theif to see inside the car - perhaps, he only saw a happy middle age man
in a rented car - I guess that must have prodded thoughts of cameras, money
and computers, etc.
Sorry, for running on, but we all have our personal side to our work and the
maps, don't we. I'm not only sad about the lost maps, I'm sad that I cannot
travel in safety - to what is turing out to be more and more places. (An
isolated incident? The following evening I returned to the spot in an
attempt to recognize any characters with similar intentions. Three parking
spaces from the shattered glass still on the pavement, was a physician and
his wife from Canada. They were looking through their suitcase. I went to
warn them of the risks in the area. They said their car was broken into 20
minutes earlier!)

So, what follows is the list of missing items. Perhaps through
word-of-mouth, someone may hear of items being offered for sale. Not likely,
but maybe.
Of course, please contact me if you do. And, if anyone can deseminate the
info to pertinent parties in Florida, this would be appreciate.

My thanks, James E. Hess Heritage Map Museum
