I'll admit that once I would have been apalled that a collector would sell
a collection rather than donate it to a library. As a special collections
librarian, I was busy soliciting donations and had relatively little in
the way of funds to buy materials.
More mellow now, I see the marketplace as the perfect mechanism for
ensuring that each book (or collection of books) reaches the person (or
institution) who really wants it, precisely because they are willing to
pay for it.
I may still object because I think prices for some things are too high,
but that's the nature of the marketplace.
