Lawrence Clark Powell 90th Birthday Celebration

Lawrence Clark Powell Birthday Celebration
The University of Arizona Library is hosting a series of events
as part of our celebration for Lawrence Clark Powell's 90th birthday:
The main library and Special Collections lobbies will be devoted to an
exhibition featuring Ward Ritchie's designs for the writings of Lawrence
Clark Powell and books by or about Mr. Ritchie from August 12 through
September 30.
An accompanying 52 page catalogue, "Fashioned in Friendship: Lawrence
Clark Powell as Designed by Ward Ritchie," describes 93 items in relation to
the lifelong friendship between librarian and printer. Bibliographic
citations, biographical notes, quotations and 21 black and white images
recount Dr. Powell's career and showcase Mr. Ritchie's bookcraft. The
catalogue is available locally in the Special Collections lobby and
distributed nationally through several bookdealers:

A birthday luncheon, featuring Southwest anthropologist Dr. Bernard
Fontana on the Mission San Xavier del Bac and the intellectual connection
between Dr. Powell and early Southwest regional writers, will be held at
the Arizona Inn on September 12th. Reservations may be made by calling
(520) 621-6431. The cost of the luncheon is $20 per person.
As Dr. Powell's birthday gift, The University Library is working to
substantially increase the principal of the Fay and Lawrence Clark Powell
Endowment for Southwest Research, used to purchase Southwest materials
for Special Collections. Dr. Powell's friends and admirers are encouraged to
contribute to the endowment.

All donations received before September 6th will be acknowledged in a
special birthday card presented to Dr. Powell at the luncheon.
