In 1993, we had a water damage in our library, too: our
fire-extinguishing system went off in the night (without a fire) and
flooded about 3,000 books (and some computers). There were no
manuscripts damaged, but some old books. We froze the books
immediately in the cold-store of the University commons, and the
Frankfurt branch of the Battelle Institute helped us to re-thaw and dry
the books (principle of deep frozen coffee, as a Frankfurt newspaper
said)! Perhaps, you might find further informations at the Battelle
website http://www.battelle.org or direct your query to their
headquarters at Columbus, Ohio. Their postal address at Frankfurt is:
Battelle Institut
Am Roemerhof 35
D 60486 Frankfurt (Germany)
phone: ++49 69 79080 fax ++49 69 790880
The local newspapers had some articles about it on August 14, 1993 and
later. If you want copies of them, please, send me your fax number.
