Early books shelved by place/date of imprint

UC Irvine has always shelved its early imprints (principally pre-1801)
first by place of imprint (in 4 broad groups: Continent, U.K., Americas,
and California), and second by date. The books also carry LC call
numbers, which are used for intellectual access but not in shelving. This
system worked ok offline but presents a dilemma for the online catalog,
namely:
How do we maintain access to LC call numbers as a form of subject access
and also have the capability to generate a true shelflist corresponding to
the order in which the books are physically arranged? (We currently have
the former but not the latter.)
If other institutions have faced and found interesting solutions to this
(or similar) problems, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Our
online system is Innopac, but responses oriented to other systems would
also be helpful.
  Many thanks--
