I want to add my hope and wish that booksellers' announcements will not
be banned from the list. I find it a useful way of meeting people -
librarians and booksellers - interested in what I am working on - on-
line networking? - and I have discovered bookseller's offerings that
would never reach us here in Dorking but for this list. Perhaps
booksellers should think about whether their catalogues are unusual - in
terms of what they usually produce - and justify blurbs - or just one of
their general lists. In the latter case they might think of mentioning
alternate ones or every third or fourth so as not to appear intrusive to
the more sensitive on the list. We should also remember that there is a
standard netiquette - i.e. you don't quote prices!!!
Librarians should perhaps remember that antiquarian booksellers also
handle, move, store, love - and best of all actually own - rare books.
They, too, have experiences that can be drawn on and shared. Individual
booksellers will often have a deeper experience in a restricted field
than all except a librarian in an important specialist library. This is
experience that we are willing to share with you as colleagues. Yes we
are trade but....
