(Two-Year,Time-Limited Position)
North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations
for the position of Collection Assessment Librarian. Under the
primary
supervision of the Preservation Librarian, the Collection Assessment

The
incumbent will develop an inter-departmental program to review physical
condition of the general and special collections, integrate
preservation into
a collection-wide program focusing on the NCSU Libraries' strengths,
and
assess the Libraries' holdings to develop a comprehensive collection
policy
for the rare books housed by the Special Collections Department. This
temporary position is funded for two years.
Responsibilities
Condition Assessment: The Collection Assessment Librarian will survey
both
special and general collections to develop an overview of the age of
our
collections and identify types of damage and deterioration commonly
encountered. The information generated by the assessment will support
development of preservation priorities for the collections. Rare Book
Subject
Collection Assessment: The assessment will describe the subject
strengths of
the Libraries' rare book holdings. The final product will be a
collection
development policy for the Special Collections Department that
describes
current holdings, provides guidelines for the transfer project outlined
below,
and makes recommendations on future collection development. Transfer
Project:
Using the condition assessment and collection development policy for
guidelines, the Collection Assessment Librarian will review selected
portions
of the general collections to determine whether material found in the
open
stacks should be transferred to Special Collections. Materials no
longer
suited for housing in special collections will be transferred to the
general
collections.Intellectual Access: We assume that the Transfer Project
will
increase substantially the Special Collections Department's holdings.
