I want to thank all those who responded to my recent request for
information and opinions on map thief Gilbert Bland, about whom I am
writing a lengthy feature for Outside magazine. Your input was greatly
instructive and appreciated.
Now, I have two more requests. First, I am trying to get a sense for what
made the Bland case such a high-profile one. Was it simply the breadth of
his crime spree? The audacious nature of his thefts? The type of maps he
took? The dollar value of the maps? Please e-mail me
(mharvey@interaccess.com) with your thoughts. (I'm on an incredibly tight
deadline at this point, so the sooner I hear from you the better.) I'd also
appreciate it if respondents would include a phone number so that I can
contact them directly.
And finally, the art department at Outside magazine hopes to get in touch
with anyone who has kept a clip file on the Bland case. Photo director
Susan B. Smith asked me to stress that she is looking for actual clippings
from real newspapers, not xeroxes or computer printouts. She guarantees
that any clips Outside borrows for its artwork will be promptly returned.
Please e-mail her (ssmith@outsidemag.com) or call her at 505-989-7100 as
soon as possible. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Miles Harvey
