Re: Theft of 134 rare legal books; prosecution & sentencing
In July, 1996, a long-time employee of the San Francisco Law Library was
arrested for the theft and attempted sale of rare legal books. Ultimately
about 134 titles were recovered, including Statham's Abridgment (1490),
Littleton's Tenures (1557), a dozens of other primarily 17th century rare
legal books. The thief was convicted by a jury on all counts of 6 felonies
on May 13, 1997. For sentencing, it would be very helpful to have data
regarding sentences imposed in other book thefts. We have been in touch with
a number of librarians and institutions around the country in the last two
weeks, but would be grateful for any information any of you would have.
You may contact me at this email address: Rapbell@aol.com or by fax:
415-554-6194 or phone 415-554-6824. We need any information by the end of
June. If anyone is interested in writing a letter to the district attorney
regarding this type of crime to be used for sentencing purposes, please
contact me as soon as possible.
Thank you.
